New Project: Rubberband Racing

The start of the new year brings the start of a new project. Rubberband Racing will be the next Flash game I release.

Find the first few details about the game after the break.

Features

Rubberband Racing is inspired by classics like the Micro Machines video game series. You’ll control little toy cars which you have to pilot through makeshift racing tracks and obstacle courses. Your speed and your ability to collect points with your vehicle will determine your score in the end.

The game will feature a detailed top-down view with 3D graphics and a unique control scheme that will allow you to steer your car very intuitively and fluently. Playing a racing game with your keyboard can result in rather imprecise handling of your car, which is something Rubberband Racing will avoid.

Scaling The Project

I will also try to scale the project more efficiently. That means that I will release a very basic, but playable version of the game as soon as possible. This version will feature the final physics, gameplay and menus, but only few cars to choose from, for example.

Then, I will add more content like

  • cars,
  • race tracks,
  • maybe even game modes

based on the views the game receives. This way, I can gather feedback early on and invest time into extending the game depending on how well received it is.

This should help me avoid putting a lot of effort into assets without knowing how people will react to the concept.

Release

Rubberband Racing will be released “when it’s done”, but I do plan on finishing the basic version within this month.

I will release more details and pictures within the next days, so stay tuned.
